How do you measure green innovation when no two institutions agree on what “green” even means?
The problem is real. When we compared the three most widely used green patent classifications (EPO, OECD and WIPO), only 11.3% of green patent families were shared across all three. Different definitions produce different numbers — which makes credible international comparison almost impossible.
That ends now. EconSight is proud to have helped WIPO build the IPC–Green Technology Concordance (WIPO–GTIS) — the first harmonized global standard for tracking green innovation.
It reconciles the five major existing systems (CNIPA, EPO, JPO, OECD and WIPO) into one consensus-based framework of 5 sectors and 36 technology fields — relying solely on IPC codes.
EconSight’s contribution: We have consolidated the systems and IPC-codes. Most importantly, we deployed our state-of-the-art AI models to validate the selected IPC classes, testing each technology field against real patent samples and refining the mappings for higher accuracy.
The result is a transparent, reproducible way to track green innovation worldwide. It is primarily built for macro-statistical analysis and international comparison.
