China technology focus in new 5-year plan for 2026-2030

China position in strategic technologies

As part of the recommendations for the next five-year plan, China has outlined its technology priorities for the near future.

The technologies themselves are not a big surprise. However, the documents and statements of the last few days reveal a stronger focus on innovation quality. From a patent perspective, this is understandable, which is why we are showing here where China stands in these focus technologies compared to the US and Europe in terms of world-class patents. China is a leader in digital, energy, and industrial technologies.

Also interesting is the new focus on advanced materials such as composites, alloys, and semiconductor materials. The race is still open here. The same applies to mobility technologies. Health technologies continue to lag behind but are very dynamic.

More analyses to follow when more details become available.

The interactive chart shows the position of China and other selected countries in the focus  technologies. The position is the share of the respective country in the total number of world-class patents in the respective technology – the global share. For better readability, individual countries can be shown or hidden by clicking on the legend. The comparison with 2020 can also be shown or hidden. This shows the massive leap that China has made in many technologies in recent years.
